Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and emotions. One of the most prominent features of BPD is the experience of extreme mood swings, which can fluctuate rapidly and unpredictably. Individuals with BPD may feel intense emotions such as anger, sadness, or anxiety that can change within a short period, complicating their ability to maintain stable relationships and a consistent self-identity. These mood swings are often triggered by interpersonal stressors or fears of abandonment, further illustrating the instability inherent in the disorder. Understanding this characteristic is crucial for recognizing and diagnosing borderline personality disorder and differentiating it from other personality disorders that may not exhibit such extremes in emotional experience.
